Star Tavern, 6 Belgrave Mews West, LONDON, SW1X 8HT [Map]
I was particularly impressed with this pub, which dates back to Georgian times. Nearly caught the taxi driver out, as he had to glance at his A to Z to remind himself where Belgravia Mews West was. Fortunately he eventually found it and after paying him had just enough money left to purchase a couple of fine pints of Fuller’s ESB (abv 5.5%, a strong award winning full-bodied beer with a wonderful hoppy finish) and a reasonably priced filling meal. Not only do they serve award-winning beers but they’ve appeared in every edition of CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide. We did feel though that the Star should really be situated in a small village in London’s Green Belt with its crowded but relaxed, friendly atmosphere and very impressive hanging baskets. I guess it is a little away from the main hustle and bustle of the city being located up a quiet mews, undiscovered by many a London cabby! Within, I particularly liked the room to the left, comfortable and a slightly more formal feel than the average bar with ceiling fans, big curtains, leather settees and chairs and antiques from the tea and coffee trade. If this room is full there are several downstairs and another upstairs, so you should hopefully find space in at least one of them.
