FacilitiesEvening Cheese!, Lunchtime Meals, Quiet Bar, Rail Station Near Pub

Colin in front of the Queen's Head, September 2000

A great pub for fine real ales and good cheese too! The pub is situated down a side street 5 minutes walk west of the centre of town and about the same distance southeast of the cathedral. Clientele wise it was more the older generation than young though they welcomed us youngsters in. Certainly a friendly atmosphere in this smart comfortable very respectable pub and we were lucky to get a seat as it was absolutely 'heaving' on the Friday night that we visited the pub in early March 1999.

It's a Marston's alehouse though they do serve a former 'CAMRA Beer of the Year' Timmy Taylor's Landlord, (abv. 4.3%) a full-bodied well-balanced brew. They've guest beers on offer too although we stayed with our trusted Landlord.

Moving onto the cheese, well they've a big refrigerator just to the left of the bar full of all sorts of cheeses which they serve at lunchtimes and it's the only food available during the evenings. They offer various options where you can combine one or two cheeses with different pates and I guess basically have whatever you feel like. We called in on a sunny Sunday evening in September and had a very satisfying feed. We chose three cheeses and one pate between the two of us. The cheese was served with fresh crusty granary bread with your own selection of a variety of home made pickles alongside onions and gherkins. It was all obviously washed down with a couple of pints of real ale.

Certainly well worth a visit if you're into great beer and cheese.
