The West End, April 2001

Formerly known as 'The Sportsman' this back-street local underwent a complete refurbishment at the end of the 20th century and is now a popular local selling a good range of well-kept real ales. It's definitely not a traditional-style pub, more an upmarket bar about 5 minutes walk from the centre of Stratford with a very comfortable interior and plenty of sofas scattered around the bar. Quite a sizeable L-shaped bar area with further seating through a set of french windows in the rear garden.

An excellent choice of real ale is available and includes Hook Norton Old Hookey and Old Spot from the small Uley brewery. This Gloucestershire brewer is well known for producing very high quality real ale, and Old Spot (abv 5%) is my favourite, a lovely rich, full-bodied very distinctive brew. The pub also usually has a guest beer or two available.

Food is available only at lunchtimes.
