Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, Great Langdale, AMBLESIDE, LA22 9JY [Map]
A pub that many a lakeland walker will talk about and fondly refer to as the 'ODG'. The ideal stopping off point following a walk up Great Langdale. Have spent many a pleasant evening in the bar having treked to the summit of Scafell Pike, England's highest mountain or one of the surrounding peaks. Jennings, Theakstosn and Black Sheep beers on offer plus a guest beer or two and farm cider for those that feel like it. Lots of simple filling food on offer (pizzas, chilli con carne etc.) 12-2pm and 6-9pm. The pub is really a simple inn with a basic but perfectly adequate walkers bar with benches and a more formal bar for hotel guests. There's usually a roaring fire in the Hiker's bar to warm you up though you may have to queue at the bar for a while as it's a popular pub, particularly towards dusk as walkers seek refreshment after a tough day on the fells. No machines or music, just good beer and conversation. There's also an outside seating area pictured above which in favourable weather offers fine views across Great Langdale.
