Dog & Bell, 116 Prince Street, LONDON, SE8 3JD [Map]
I was first recommended this fine free house by my good friend Jim who at the time lived pretty close by. Deptford, New Cross and Greenwich stations are all within a 5-10 minute stroll. Perhaps not a district that you'd visit by accident, this gem is well worth making a special visit to. A new landlord has changed the emphasis a little at this pub. He's a chef and serves a wide range of freshly prepared dishes including some excellent curries on the pub's curry night (when you get a curry and pint of beer as part of the deal). The pub's welll known by CAMRA who have voted it the best pub in SE London several times, and the CAMRA London Pub of the Year in 2004. Expect an impressive range of ever changing guest real ales alongside the regulars (London Pride and ESB) brewed by Fullers and plenty of real ale fans enjoying the ale, food and atmosphere. The pub's also noted for it's decent range of bottled continental beers with plenty of classic Belgian beers available. You can always expect a warm welcome, friendly intelligent service, and a decent pubby atmosphere that's not disturbed by intrusive music or TV. Plenty of areas to sit in, and I hope that they still have their bar billiards table, now one of precious few pubs to offer this traditional game. Cheers Jim for your recommendation!
