Travellers Rest, 169 Mount Road, BIRKENHEAD, CH42 8NL [Map]
Have had numerous E-mails commenting that I should at least have one pub in Merseyside included in my guide. How about this one. This pub won the 1998 and 1999 Wirral Pub of the Year award and rightly so. A wonderful inn a few miles south of Birkenhead on the Wirral. Unfortunately I've no photo of the pub but I can assure you that it is a very nice 'village' inn though obviously the urban sprawl of Merseyside has now drawn it into the main conurbation though some will say that a village atmosphere still remains. The pub dates back to 1720 and is still a very popular meeting place for locals and visitors (mainly walkers). There's one very large open-plan lounge served by a single bar. There are cosy corners and there's also a non-smoking area. They've an excellent selection of beers as a good half a dozen real ales are usually on offer. They include the local Cains Bitter, three or four other regular beers as well as some guest beers too. They offer food at lunchtimes every day apart from Sunday. The food has wond a Parliamentary Food Club award too! So, if you're on the Wirral and fancy a quality pint of real ale in a friendly local, pop in the Travellers Rest and I'm sure that you won't be disappointed.
