Friars Inn, 3 St. Marys St, BRIDGNORTH, WV16 4DW [Map]
A 17th-Century inn that used to be a posting house that's down a side road just off the main shopping street in the town. To enter the pub you have to pass down a pleasant narrow alley decorated by hanging baskets. As you enter there's a small restaurant area to the left and a larger bar area to the right. A good range of food is available every lunchtime and evening though I'm not sure that they serve food on Sunday evenings. They'll toast you some sandwiches, fry you some fish and even cook a jalfreizi crazy curry. The staff were both friendly and helpful. They serve the best pint of Enville ale that I've ever had, a wonderful straw-coloured, hoppy beer with honey as one of the ingredients (abv. 4.5%). I sampled it there in 1994, 3 years later in July 1997 it was just as good and a further 5 years later in March 2002 it was still on top form! They also had a couple of Holden's beers brewed in the Black Country. They do have high quality accommodation available too and the local town guide advert for the inn reads 'we take pride in our excellent breakfasts'. There's a courtyard outside with seats available too if you fancy a dose of fresh air with your pint.
