Cwellyn Arms, Rhyd Ddu, CAERNARFON, LL54 6TL [Map]
It's a pub that I'd been intending to visit for several years and finally popped in over Easter 1998. It's on the A4085 a few miles north of Beddgelert. A few locals scattered around and lots of visitors mainly in the form of walkers. The view from the pub is spectacular on a clear day with Snowdon lying just to the East. In fact a path up Snowdon lies just a few yards from the front door of the pub. It's quite a quiet path up Snowdon too. To the south there's the picturesque Llyn y Gadair. There's a tremendous range of good quality real ales on offer and I reckon it's one of the best in Wales. Even so, the pint I was an inch short of a pint so had to ask for a top up. Foodwise there's allsorts on offer from home-made soups, unusual salads, home-made chicken liver pate, great chargrilled steaks and a full range of pizzas! In the Spring and Summer they also hold barbecues outside by the 'Excalibur' waterfall with local lamb burgers available as well as lamb chops, sausages etc. They're also the 'Which Good Food Guide'. They encourage families and offer a children's menu and out the back you'll find an adventure playground. There's also accommodation available though you'll have to ring them for more details.
